The Story Behind Kalo Living
Kalo Living was born from a belief that children deserve more than just care they deserve homes that heal.
Our founder, Katrina Hall, has spent over 25 years working across health and social care, leading services that put people before process and compassion before compliance.
Having seen the gaps in traditional residential care the lack of warmth, creativity, and emotional understanding Katrina set out to create something different: a service built around belonging, dignity, and opportunity.
From that vision came Kalo Living a movement to redefine what children’s homes can and should be.
Our Purpose
Kalo Living exists to provide safe, nurturing homes for children and young people aged 7–17 who have experienced trauma, loss, or instability.
Our purpose is simple:
To help every child feel safe enough to heal, confident enough to grow, and supported enough to dream again.
We do this through:
To help every child feel safe enough to heal, confident enough to grow, and supported enough to dream again.
We do this through:
- Trauma-informed practice, understanding behaviour through empathy and insight.
- Therapeutic support, integrated into daily life, not separate from it.
- Relationship-based care, where consistency and trust form the foundation of healing.
- Education and life skills, giving children confidence and independence.
What Kalo Means
The word Kalo is rooted in meanings of goodness, integrity, and purpose values that sit at the heart of everything we do.
To us, Kalo Living represents living with kindness, honesty, and hope principles that guide every decision, every placement, and every child’s journey.
Our Values
Everything at Kalo Living is built around five core values:
Safety
Every child deserves to feel safe
physically, emotionally, and
psychologically.
Respect
We listen deeply and act with integrity,
valuing each child’s individuality,
background, and potential.

Empowerment
We focus on what children can do giving them ownership of their journey, their choices, and their voice.
Hope
Even in crisis, we see possibility. Every
child has a future and our role is to
help them see it too.

Belonging
Our homes are communities, not institutions. We create environments that feel like home and build lasting relationships that endure beyond placement.
Our Founder’s Vision
“Kalo Living was created from both professional experience and personal truth.
I’ve seen children fail through no fault of their own systems that were too rigid, services that forgot what care truly means.
My goal is to build homes where care is intelligent, compassionate, and life-changing where children feel seen, safe, and inspired to believe in tomorrow.”

Our Leadership
Philosophy
Our leadership model mirrors our care model: reflective, relational, and responsive.
We don’t lead through hierarchy we lead through humility and presence.
Every manager and senior at Kalo Living is trained to:
- Model trauma-informed leadership.
- Support teams through reflection, not reaction.
- Prioritise emotional safety and consistency for staff and children alike.
- Drive continuous improvement through curiosity and compassion.
We believe that happy, supported staff create safe, supported children.
Our Vision for the
Future
Our aim is to build a small portfolio of exceptional homes across Torbay and the South West, each one setting a new benchmark for quality, culture, and outcomes in residential childcare.
We will continue to:
- Partner with local authorities to reduce out of area placements.
- Work with mental health professionals, schools, and families to create continuity of care.
- Invest in training, innovation, and wellbeing to ensure our teams stay inspired and resilient.
- Build pathways from short stay to long term care, keeping children connected and supported every step of the way.
