Our people - Family & Community
Because every child deserves connection, belonging, and a sense of home.
Rebuilding Relationships, Restoring Trust
At Kalo Living, we understand that children’s lives don’t begin and end with our homes.
Family, community, and connection play a vital role in every young person’s journey even when those relationships have been fractured or lost.
Our goal is to help children reconnect safely, build positive relationships, and rediscover a sense of belonging within both their families and wider communities.
We work to ensure that every child feels part of something bigger a family, a network, a community because connection is the foundation of healing.
Working with Families
We believe in working with families, not just about them.
Whenever it is safe and in the child’s best interests, we involve families in every step of the care journey.
Our family focused approach includes:
- Regular communication between staff, social workers, and family members.
- Supervised and supported contact sessions, held in calm, homely environments that promote positive interaction.
- Flexible visiting times to accommodate parents and carers.
- Preparation and debrief sessions to help children process family visits safely.
- Parent and sibling involvement in celebration events, milestones, and transitions.
We understand that family relationships can be complicated, emotional, and fragile.
Our trained staff support both children and parents to rebuild these connections with empathy, structure, and patience so that relationships can heal in ways that are healthy and sustainable.
Community
Connections
A sense of community is central to wellbeing.
That’s why each Kalo Living home is an active part of its local area not isolated from it.
We work with local organisations, schools, and services to ensure children are seen as valued members of their community, not defined by their circumstances.
Our community partnerships include:
- Local schools and education providers, supporting reintegration into learning.
- Youth clubs and sports organisations, helping children find belonging through shared interests.
- Creative and cultural groups, such as art, music, and theatre projects.
- Faith and wellbeing organisations, where appropriate to the child’s beliefs.
- Volunteering and skill-building opportunities that develop confidence and community pride.
Children are encouraged to give back, participate, and experience the normality of being part of something because inclusion builds identity and self-worth.
Family Support and Outreach
Our relationship with families doesn’t end at the door.
We recognise that sustainable change often requires support beyond the placement, so we offer family focused interventions designed to strengthen bonds and communication.
This can include:
- Family mediation and supported conversations.
- Parenting guidance sessions delivered by our therapeutic team.
- Shared planning meetings to align goals between families, social workers, and our staff.
- Post-placement follow-up, where families can access advice or support after a child transitions home.
Our goal is to equip both children and families with the understanding and tools they need to maintain progress long after they leave our care.
Celebrating Diversity
and Belonging
Every child who comes to Kalo Living brings their own story, background, and identity.
We celebrate that diversity and ensure that every home is a place where children feel respected, seen, and accepted for who they are.
Our inclusive approach includes:
- Respecting cultural, religious, and personal identities.
- Providing access to community spaces and events that reflect each child’s heritage.
- Offering culturally appropriate meals, celebrations, and traditions.
- Encouraging pride in who they are and where they come from.
Belonging isn’t just about being somewhere safe it’s about being seen and valued for who you are.
