Supporting families through every step of
the journey

When Your Child Comes to Stay
With Us

We understand that having your child move into residential care even for a short time can be one of the hardest experiences a parent or carer can face. At Kalo Living, we want you to know that you’re not alone.
Our homes are safe, nurturing spaces for children and young people aged 7–17, designed to provide stability, support, and understanding during difficult times. While they’re with us, your child will be cared for by a team of compassionate professionals who treat them with respect, kindness, and dignity just as you would want. We don’t replace families; we work alongside them.

Our Approach to Care

Every child who stays with Kalo Living is supported through our trauma informed and relationship-based care model.
This means we focus on:
  • Understanding behaviour through empathy, not judgment.
  • Creating a sense of safety and trust before addressing challenges.
  • Building positive routines and confidence through structure and consistency.
  • Encouraging family connection at every safe opportunity.
Our goal is to help children feel calm, understood, and ready to take positive steps forward whether that means returning home, moving to foster care, or transitioning to independence.

Keeping Families
Involved

We believe that families play a vital role in a child’s progress and recovery. Where it is safe and appropriate, we’ll always work to keep you involved in your child’s life and care planning.
You’ll be invited to:
  • Attend meetings about your child’s progress and goals.
  • Visit regularly, at times that work best for you.
  • Take part in activities or meals, helping your child maintain positive bonds.
  • Share your insights about your child’s needs, routines, and personality.
  • Receive updates from our team about how your child is doing.
We’ll also support you with guidance and reassurance if you’re finding the situation difficult we know it can be an emotional time for families, and we’ll always listen with understanding.

Contact and Visits

We support children to maintain meaningful relationships with their family members, as long as it’s in their best interests and part of their care plan.
Visits are flexible and can take place in:
  • Our home’s comfortable family lounge or garden area.
  • The local community (e.g., cafés, parks, or shared activities).
  • Supervised contact rooms, when required for safety or structure.
If travel is an issue, we also offer:
  • Video calls or phone contact.
  • Letters, emails, and photographs to help families stay connected.
Our staff will work with you and your social worker to create a plan that supports your relationship in the best possible way.

Rebuilding Together

Sometimes relationships between children and parents need time and support to heal. That’s why we include family work as part of our service, offering:
  • Supported contact and family sessions to rebuild trust.
  • Parenting guidance and emotional support through our team and external professionals.
  • Family mediation and reflective conversations facilitated by trained practitioners.
  • Joint goal-setting, so everyone feels involved in the plan for the future.
We believe that healing happens together and that progress is strongest when families and professionals work in partnership.

Transitions and Next Steps

We know how important it is for you to understand what happens after your child’s stay with us. From the moment your child arrives, we start planning for their next steps whether that’s returning home, moving to another placement, or preparing for independence.
We’ll involve you in these discussions and ensure that:
  • You receive clear communication about progress and decisions.
  • Transition plans are gradual, thoughtful, and child centred.
  • Support is available to both you and your child before, during, and after any move.
Our goal is for your child to leave feeling stronger, more confident, and ready for what comes next and for you to feel included, respected, and supported along the way.

Your Voice Matters

We welcome your feedback at every stage. If there’s something you’d like to share a concern, a compliment, or an idea we’ll always listen.
You can speak to:
  • Your child’s Key Worker or Senior Support Worker
  • The home’s Registered Manager
  • Our Operations Manager or Responsible Individual
  • Or contact us directly by phone or email
Your views help us improve and ensure we’re always delivering the best possible care.
